Women Laughing Alone with Salad explores the Internet meme of ‘Women Laughing Alone at salad’, which became an Internet sensation c. 2011.

The Internet noticed an abundance of stock-images depicting women laughing at their salads, in an absurd, hysterical and often sexualised manner.

By re-staging her subjects and pairing their forced convulsions with stock laughter, ellen.gif questions the gender norms of consumption and the representation and function of stock imagery in the online realm.

Women Laughing Alone with Salad was exhibited as part of Watermark, curated by Ambar Navarro at Nous Tous Gallery, Los Angeles and as part of GA(L)STROMY, curated by Jackiie Popjes, at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
